Closing date for EABBA Virtual Solo & Ensemble contest is fast approaching

The closing date for the East Anglian Brass Band Association Solo & Ensemble contest is fast approaching. Entries and videos must be submitted by Friday 16th April. Entry forms are available by emailing administration@eabba.org.uk

Classes include:

  • Aged 13 and under Slow Melody
  • Aged 14-17 Slow Melody
  • Open Slow Melody
  • Novice 18 and over Slow Melody (for adults who have returned to banding in the last two years after at least a five-year break or have learnt to play a brass instrument in the last three years)
  • Open Air Varie
  • Ensemble (2-10 different players)

Lockdown/social distancing rules must be complied with.

The adjudicator is Mr David Stowell.

Prizes include vouchers from Pennine Music and Trevada Music.

Results will be announced over the weekend of 15th/16th May. All performances will be on the EABBA YouTube Channel over the weekend of 15th/16th May.

Change of date for Cory concert to Sunday 29th August 2021

This year is the Association’s 90th Anniversary year but unfortunately plans to mark this milestone has been interrupted by the effects of the pandemic. The Gala concert to be given by the world’s number one ranked brass band Cory Band scheduled for Sunday 16th May has been postponed to Sunday 29th August at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich with a start time of 3.00pm (Covid-19 restrictions permitting). Ticket details will be published in due course.

Solo & Ensemble contest moves online

Due to the pandemic the Solo & Ensemble contest planned for Saturday 15th May will now be an online contest. The adjudicator will be David Stowell. Further details and entry forms will be available from the Association Secretary (email administration@eabba.org.uk) towards the end of February.

Report on 2019 Brass Training Day

On Sunday 20th October the East Anglian Brass Band Association held its Annual Brass Training Day at the Hewett Academy, Norwich. Delegates from age 10 upwards had enrolled for the course. This year the tutors were from the Foden’s Band. The change in the format of the course which started in 2018 with an Andante Band for less experienced players and an Allegro Band for more experienced players was continued. Altogether there were over 70 delegates enrolled to participate in the two bands.

EABBA 81st Annual Spring Gala Concert

On Sunday 2nd June 2019 the 2018 National Champions, the Foden’s Band, made a return visit to St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich to perform the East Anglian Brass Band Association’s 81st Annual Gala Concert.

The Association launched its ‘Brass For Youth Project 2019’ to give young people who are learning to play a brass instrument the opportunity to be able to listen to a live performance by one of the world’s best brass bands. With support from the Norwich Freemen’s Charity and the Geoffrey Whatling Charity together with donations in memory of Dianne Hastings the Association was able to offer free tickets to young brass musicians in Norfolk and Suffolk. Young brass people from approximately twenty schools, bands and music centres attended the concert. For many this was the first time they had attended such a concert and what a fantastic concert it was.

Dianne Hastings

It is with much sadness that the East Anglian Brass Band Association reports the passing of Dianne Hastings on Thursday 8th November. At her time of death Dianne was Life Vice–President of the East Anglian Brass Band Association. Dianne had been Secretary of the Association for over 42 years until her retirement in 2015 following a stroke. Dianne and her late husband Brian worked tirelessly for brass bands and their members in East Anglia. In recognition of their work in 2002 Dianne and Brian were honoured to be invited to the Royal Garden Party at Sandringham as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

Report on 2018 Brass Training Day

On Sunday 14th October the East Anglian Brass Band Association held its Annual Brass Training Day at the Hewett Academy, Norwich. Delegates from age 10 upwards had enrolled for the course. The tutors were from the World Number One Brass Band – Cory Band. This year saw a change to the format of the course in that there were two bands. The Andante Band was for less experienced players. The Allegro Band was for more experienced players. Altogether there were 80 delegates attending.

Review of 2017 Gala concert

On Sunday 7th May 2017 England’s number 1 brass band, the Brighouse & Rastrick Band, made a welcome return visit to St Andrew’s Hall at Norwich to perform the East Anglian Brass Band Association’s 79th Annual Gala Concert. This concert was performed in memory of Donald Palmer, a long standing Trustee of the Association who had given over 40 years service.

Appointment as Life Vice President - Recognising over 42 years of service by the Association Secretary Dianne Hastings

Just over one year ago the Association’s Secretary Dianne Hastings suffered a severe stroke. Recognising Dianne’s commitment and dedication, at their latest meeting the Executive Committee appointed Dianne Life Vice President of the Association and will be making a presentation and playing carols to her at her nursing home on Saturday 10th December.

Congratulations

The Association would like to congratulate the Cawston Band (Second Section) and Castleton Brass (Fourth Section) for winning their respective sections at the London & Southern Regional Contest of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain held at Stevenage on the 19th and 20th March. Both bands have received an invitation to compete in the National Finals at Cheltenham in September.
